Water ceremony
Organizer: MCFN/Toronto Island friendship group
The first event of the season will be a water ceremony on Ward’s Beach, as a way to give thanks to the lake and honour the life giving water and our obligations to care for the water. The ceremony will also acknowledge Toronto Island as part of the Mississaugas’ treaty lands with recognition that no treaties were ever signed regarding the waters. Debby Danard will lead the ceremony and we intend to reach out to Great Lake Water Walkers in order to best honour Grandmother Josephine, renowned Anishnaabe water walker, as part of the ceremony. We will close the ceremony with a gathering at the Ward’s Island Association to share food.
