Delta Family Resource Centre Youth Group

The Delta Family Resource Centre's After school program offers activities surrounding academic support, education on nutrition, and physical activity. For nutrition, the youth support with preparing snacks or meals for their peers while learning about the nutritional value that it provides and the importance of communal meals. As a means to further connect them with the process of how we get our food, the youth participate in learning how to start seedlings of food they are accustom to having at the program. Also, for physical activity that is held outdoors, youth engage in nature scavenger hunts to learn more about the plants and animals around them.

Along with cooking and nature walks, conversations centred on how to be environmentally friendly by repurposing items considered to be waste. For example, students have used recyclable items as containers for starting the seedlings. On the walks we also discuss ways to prevent pollution by avoiding and encouraging others to not litter.
