Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre

The mission of the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre is to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for women from all walks of life, who live and/or work in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. To achieve this goal, the centre provides supportive surroundings with meals, counseling, advocacy and programs which nurture and empower members. Since our grassroots beginnings in 1978, DEWC has grown to provide services to 500 women every day, and continues to serve as a crucial place of safety and refuge, resource centre, and community hub for marginalized women. In a community survey, almost half of women identified the centre as one of the places they feel safest. Through our drop-in centre and emergency shelter, vulnerable women have access to vital necessities, refuge from violence, a continuum of care, and a place of welcome, empowerment, healing, and sisterhood.
