Friends of Silver Creek
Friends of SC began as an advocacy group to save Silver Creek School which provides programs for children with disabilities, learning and mental health needs for Etobicoke and Toronto. In addition, if the school was sold to developers, the community would lose 1/3 of the community green space at Silver Creek Park. The current development on Eglinton from Wincott Dr. to Lloyd Manor will result in 1000+ units -- impacting green space per resident ratio -- in a ward noted to lack services (Social Planning Toronto : Central Etobicoke Hub Preliminary Report Feb/17).
Currently, our purpose is to bring people to the park to engage in communal events. Our focus is the high number of seniors in our community.
Social Planning Toronto (2017) noted that 19.1% of Ward 4 and Ward 3 residents are 65+ -- higher than that of Toronto overall. Also noted is the lack of services, and lack of information regarding available services. Social isolation is a result.
We are organizing to provide Tai Chi and yoga/chair yoga in the park for seniors. We are also hoping to collaborate with Richview Library to provide summer time "reading rooms" and games tables in the park, with a pop-up coffee shop.
We're looking for volunteers in these areas:
- Regular volunteers
- Occasional volunteers
