Friends of Stephenson Park

Our park group originally formed for the community to reclaim a neighbourhood park. An unused and sad space needed some love and attention. With an element of crime, the Park was not a place where kids came to play or where neighbours would meet each other. We started with a community picnic on a summer afternoon which happened to be Canada Day and Pride weekend. Neighbours from all walks of life brought there lunch, and we shared cake and watermelon, the best thing to have at a celebration. This was the beginning of something beautiful. We continued with Saturday morning yoga, Music Nights in the summer, Community Clean Up, and the first Natural IceRink the Park had seen in years. That Family Day Weekend 3 years ago, we had a skating party with over 150 neighbours come out on one of the coldest days ever recorded. Huddled by a makeshift fire pit, we knew we had changed Stephenson Park. Our park has been used by our local Community Outreach Officer from 55 Division as an example of how to engage a community. Our mission is to make our park and active space year round with events appealing to the diverse members of our neighbourhood.
