Kids on Wheels
Our mission is to introduce young children (2.5 to 6 years old) in British Columbia to the joy of cycling and active, outdoor, sustainable lifestyles by empowering them to use balance bikes (no-pedal bikes) and engaging them through fun riding activities.
At the public events or spaces we set up a Kids on Wheels Zone where the children are
able to try different balance bikes in a safe and secure environment, supervised
by our staff and volunteers. We currently have 20 balance bikes of different sizes,
heights, brands and materials, as well as 20 helmets. The advantage of having
such a wide variety of bikes is that the children are able to try out different bikes
and to see what is most comfortable for them. Often we heard from parents that
even though they purchased a balance bike for their child, he or she is not using
it. The reason is often not a lack of enthusiasm for cycling on the child’s part, it’s
just the simple fact that the bike is not a good fit for that child. For kids who are
reluctant or afraid to ride their bikes, often just seeing kids of different ages riding
the balance bikes is enough encouragement for them to enthusiastically join in.
The Kids on Wheels zone is located in public areas that are accessible for families. We have a few signs such as stop signs, a traffic light, a crosswalk, and traffic cones to make it a fun, interactive activity. With the help of our staff, we give each child the balance bike that we think would fit him or her best. However, children are free to choose and try a few bikes if they wish.
