Mosaic Home Care & Community Resource Centres

Our organization has the absolute honour and pleasure of working with older adults in the German Mills Community. Having a community centre located in The Shops on Steeles and 404 has allowed us to truly learn from the community we belong in order empower and equip them appropriately. Mosaic runs several free programs throughout the year inclusing health workshops, arts and music programs, exercise classes along with yoga and meditation. Although most of our social programs are held indoors, we have seen a hugely positive impact from the programs we have hosted in outdoor spaces. One of the programs we host over the summer season is pole walking. Over the years, we have seen this exercise program double in size and become a popular option for older adults in this area to achieve their physical fitness goals. Not only is this program great for those looking to stay in shape and active but it’s also a great way to stay in touch with the community you live in. People enjoy socializing and look forward to seeing their walking partners with whom they develop relationships with in . One of the biggest issues facing our aging population at the moment is isolation. As individuals age, the likelihood of their social circles getting smaller increases and the ability to recreate connections becomes more difficult. Of course, there are a number of factors that are at play: general decline in health, mobility issues, transportation, mental health issues, etc. Mosaic Home Care & Community Resource Centres aims to be a point of contact for individuals who may have a difficult time accessing useful resources and integrating themselves into new social forums that we know can help with the overall health and wellbeing of a person.

We love the idea of connecting people through nature and because of the success we have seen with our pole walking programs and also the programs that have been run through the Parks People in the past Mosaic would be privileged to organize an exercise program for our German Mills community at a local park. If possible, we propose hosting yoga in the park for all ages in a park close to The Shops on Steeles & 404. We have a wide network of partners and facilitators that would be willing to work with us on a project like this (Yoga instructors, volunteers, etc.). We also have the means to help market a program like this as well through our quarterly newsletter and social networks.

We were thrilled to receive the link to apply for this grant from Amanda Coligan from the City of Toronto and we thank you for taking the time to review our application.
