NDG Art Hive / La Ruche d’Art de NDG

La Ruche d’Art de NDG Art Hive is a free, accessible community art project, part of the Art Hives movement (www.arthives.org). Our Art Hive was born from the volunteer-run Cheap Art Collective of St. Raymond’s: founders of the annual haunted Hallowe'en Melrose Tunnel and neighbourhood Puppet Parade. We believe that community-building and art-making go hand-in-hand. Green space has been central to our work since our beginning in 2015.

Our first two years of operations were held in the chalet in the middle of the beautiful Girouard Park in the neighbourhood of Notre-dame-de-grace (NDG), just west of downtown Montreal. We offered an open-studio space as well as more structured art activities outdoors and in the chalet on Saturdays throughout the summers of 2015-2016. The chalet was then renovated, and we were unfortunately "renovicted” so we moved our operations into the social housing buildings (HLMs) in NDG.

Prior to the pandemic, we were active in four HLMs, offering free, bilingual, accessible, inclusive spaces in the common rooms. Facilitators were on site to encourage people to create, and to help with any technical questions. Since 2017, we have offered programming in Park Georges St-Pierre on a seasonal basis. We have a permanent shipping container in this park where we store our tables, chairs and art supplies. We’ve aso collaborated with local non-profits to offer special pop-up Art Hives during key community events. We sometimes offer structured workshops and collective projects, but always with the option for individual exploration. We also offer monthly pop-ups in Benny Library. We also offer pop-ups for various community events on a sliding scale.

We've reached thousands of residents of all ages and backgrounds, breaking isolation, creating welcoming, intergenerational programming and opportunities for individual and collective expression. We provide psycho-social support and referrals to local non-profits.

Our dream is to have a permanent space in NDG, while continuing to offer outdoor art facilitation in Park George St-Pierre and the HLMs in NDG.
