Neighbours of Meadowvale Park

Our group, the Neighbours of Meadowvale Park, was formed by local community members with a desire to ‘take back our park’. Several members took part in a Safegrowth course with local police and community health centre staff, did research and prepared a report looking at approaches to re-envision our local park as a safe and enjoyable hub for the community. Historically, our park has been plagued with crime, a poor reputation of safety and has been under utilized for these reasons. Our community is socio-economically and ethnically diverse and we see great value in revitalizing the physical and cultural aspects of our green space to make it a place that brings people together! We envision a park that provides a safe place for children to enjoy the outdoors and for adults to build relationships and stay active. So far, we have hosted two free events that have been very well attended and received by the community! Our most recent WinterFest event had over 200 people participate in skating and winter activities and sharing in a nutritious hot meal together. Many new Canadians within the neighborhood were able to skate for the first time with used skates donated to the event. Smiles, laughter, new connections with neighbours and positive experiences in the park are the early steps to the goal of making our park a safe community hub!
