Novel Natures

Novel Natures is a group of urban naturalists that study, document, and educate about biodiversity found in Calgary. Each and every city has a unique assemblage of native and exotic species as a result of geographic and anthropogenic influences. It is for this reason we use cross-disciplinary fields to understand Calgary from the inside out. Our purpose is to evoke a sense of curiosity for the natural world from within the city where it is easily accessible to all.

Parks are a junction for people and nature to coexist in cities. We use parks as our classrooms by introducing citizens to nature through recreation. Until recently we were just a word-of-mouth group conducting unconventional city-nature tours. These included beaver -bike tours along the Bow River, birding groups, botanical walks, and river cleanups. Parks have allowed us to do this, and the response has been welcomed by participants. Most of us are students and we have applied our research skills into understanding local biodiversity through independent studies. This year will be our formal leap into actively promoting our mission by hosting the City Nature Challenge 2019: Calgary. We are organizing a week-long series of bioblitzs throughout the city parks and the urban landscape.
