Springboard Performance

Springboard Performance is a Calgary based non-profit organization devoted to connecting
artists, audiences and community to the body and mind through physical contemporary creation and public space activation. Springboard encourages living a creative life and being engaged in cultural placemaking through festival and seasonal programming and positioning culture at street level.

Springboard's containR radically re-defines the traditional concept of audience, artist, curation and performance space as Calgary’s first designated Art Park. It is a nomadic pop-up arts venue made of repurposed shipping containers that acts as an arts, culture and community incubator. The containers serve as stages, theatres, exhibition spaces, meeting and activity centres, animating public space in Calgary at the leading edge of creative placemaking. containR expands SP’s interest and expertise in deeply connected outreach. It provides artists an opportunity for creative expression in a public setting, outside of the formal setting of a traditional performance centres and offers us new partnerships, programming opportunities, and year-round relevant exposure to new audiences. With our multiple placemaking partners, we make art more accessible and community-driven, building new connections amongst artists, green initiatives, social justice organizations and other community players, while providing community members direct, and easy, access to art and arts programming. Premiered at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, containR has gone on to animate communities in Calgary at East Village, Sunnyside, Marda Loop, Victoria Park and Forest Lawn.

containR was awarded the Colin Jackson and Arlene Strom Creative Placemaking Award at the Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions, and has been featured at the IETM Conference (Bergamo, Italy), CINARS (Montreal), Calgary Arts Congress (Calgary), and York University’s Arts, Placemaking, and Policy Conference (Toronto). In March 2018, containR was awarded a CCVO Innovation Award from the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations.
