Toronto Island/MNCFN Friendship Group

Our group was established to provide the opportunity for Toronto Island residents and visitors of the Toronto Island Park to form closer social and cultural ties with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN). We were formed following the election of one of our members to the board of the Toronto Islands Community Association (TICA), with whom we are affiliated. Our mandate is to organize public events at which islanders, park visitors, and members of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation can learn from and with each other. We are in the initial stages of organizing, to date we have met with Stacey Laforme, Chief of MCNFN and key staff as well as attending their Historical Gathering. This grant would help us in hosting the first set of events. We have a core group of five members – all residents of Toronto Island – and invite other residents to volunteer their services and expertise for specific events, such as creative input, catering, hospitality, guided tours of the island, and the like.
