Meet our 2023 Vancouver Sparking Change Senior Champions

In 2023, Vancouver Sparking Change Senior Champions led engaging and fun events in parks to foster social connections and physical activity in their communities.

Here is what they have to say about their experience of the program:

“I must say that I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into signing up for this program. I came in full of worry but left so fulfilled. I gained so many friends and knowledge just by meeting people of various cultures and backgrounds. I have received positive feedback from some of the participants, as to what they liked and what they would like in the future. This program helped a few people who just got tired of being home and just needed a program like this to mix and meet people.

I learned a lot. I appreciated our parks. I had the chance to meet a few acquaintances and make friends along the way. I would do it again in a heartbeat.” Ramola Naido, Champion 2023 – 2024

“I made new friends. These opportunities allowed me to interact with others. Also, walking made my days more joyful.” Champion 2023-2024

“I received so much appreciation from the participants. It gives me joy to get people out of their homes, especially after Covid. Single seniors need these events, and they feel safe in numbers.” Champion 2023-2024

“I have a greater appreciation for parks and green spaces as a result of participating in the program. These green spaces provide so much for the individual as well as the community – all we have to do is to go out there and enjoy it.” Champion 2023-2024

“I loved to learn from the participants and it helped me connect with my community. It was inspiring and enlightening. I really appreciate the feedback and help [from Park People]. You [Park People] were very patient and encouraging towards me.” Champion 2023-2024

“My experience with the program was very good. I met and socialized with new people by organizing and participating in different activities. It’s a new experience, certainly. But the social, physical and mental benefits are considerable.” Marguerite Jean-Delpeche, Champion 2023 – 2024

“It was a very good experience. I learnt a lot from the program and connected with others.” Rebecca Lam, Champion 2023 – 2024
