Big Opportunities for Large Urban Parks: Co-Creating the Future of the Cornerstone Parks Program

Park People’s Cornerstone Parks program brings together organizations working in large urban parks across Canada. These organizations are uniquely positioned to drive positive change in large urban parks by increasing and deepening peoples’ connection to nature, restoring biodiversity, and pursuing innovative models of collaboration with the government and community.

By connecting and supporting organizations working in large urban parks, Park People believes that together we can champion the transition to equitable cities where people and the rest of nature thrive.

This workshop will bring together representatives from large urban parks across Canada to talk about how Park People can better support your learning, networking and capacity building through our Cornerstone Parks program.

Join the conversation to talk about how we can help make the Cornerstone Parks program responsive to your organization’s needs!

The feedback received in this workshop will be used to inform Park People’s offerings to organizations working in large urban parks in 2023 and beyond.

Facilitation will be primarily in English but there will be opportunities to speak in both French and English.

An honorarium will be provided to participants who self-identify as equity-deserving or representing equity-deserving communities.

 

This workshop is open by invitation only to park professionals working in park organizations focused on large urban parks in Canada.

Park People

Sarah is a public space programmer, curator, and archivist who works to foreground the pasts, presents, and possible futures of diverse communities in complex spaces. Sarah has co-created programs within a wide range of civic, arts, and heritage organizations, including Toronto’s Allan Gardens, Myseum of Toronto, the (2SLGBTQIA+) ArQuives, the Ontario Jewish Archives, the Koffler Gallery, the Genocide Archive of Rwanda, and the National Holocaust Centre (UK).

Most recently Sarah served as Senior Manager of Programming for The Bentway, a programmed public space that explores – through arts, culture, and recreation – the changing landscape of Toronto, and urbanism worldwide.

Sue Arndt is a Program Manager at Park People. Sue leads Park People’s National Network and Cornerstone Parks program, building relationships across Canada with municipal staff, non-profits, and community members to grow the parks movement across the country. She brings to this role, over 15 years of experience in the field of urban ecology, working in the non-profit and private sectors managing partnerships, community consultations and large-scale programs.

Park People

Joy was a Speaker Ambassador at the Planetary Health Annual Meeting at Stanford University in 2019.

Born and raised in Madagascar, Joy developed a love for nature and an interest in understanding the interdependence between the well-being of a community and its built environment. She’s passionate about social and environmental justice and uses social entrepreneurship and education as tools for social change.

Her work and community engagement lead her to be selected as one of the top 150 young leaders (under 30) in sustainability by Leading Change Canada in 2020. She’s also been a reporter for the UN Climate Week summit at the United Nations headquarters in 2019, with the Global Landscape Forum for the implementation of the UN decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and now works towards the achievement of the UN SDG #11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. In 2022, she was a UNA-Canada Youth Delegate at the COP27.
